The Risk of Restarting the MLB Season

The Risk of Restarting the MLB Season

The MLB is looking at all options when it comes to starting the season, hoping to find a way all players can be tested for COVID-19 that is approved by government and state officials.

Many players, coaches and staff members around the league believe we will see a 2020 MLB season. With this being said, Major League Baseball does not have an exact idea on when.

BB13l8O1

For the most part, the league has been collecting information and will most likely wait as long as possible to present a proposal to the players association. The association would have to agree with possible new playing conditions, and the union would most likely oppose a suggestion in any more salary cuts.

In case you didn’t know, the players have agreed already to set aside some money in a shortened season. With this being said, the MLB might ask for further cuts in player’s salaries considering the beginning of the season is not supposed to have any fans in attendance.

The confidence of baseball is starting back up because a number of states have lifted or are considering lifting stay-at-home restrictions. These decisions, motivated partially politically, would more than likely make the MLB and its teams to resume playing.

Obviously, these teams first would need to feel comfortable to send their players back onto the diamond. The Miami Marlins and Tampa Bay Rays acted swiftly from guidance from medical experts and proceeded to shut down March 15th, over two weeks before the state of Florida followed.

About a month ago, the Arizona Plan was looking like the most promising result. In the plan, all 30 teams would begin the season under quarantine in Arizona, obviously without fans. The Arizona Plan has probably become the least likely at this point, though some of the ideas from the plan may be incorporated into the final one.

Baseball has many different ideas on how they are going to try to start the season and is willing to do anything to get the season safely on track. So much is a mess right now. How would the league adjust the schedule if it has moved the games to different locations? Most importantly, how can baseball even seriously think about starting the season back up when the supply of COVID-19 tests is already a massive national concern.

At best, there would be enough tests that the MLB could help conduct testing on the public in states where games are being played, but clearly we are not doing enough testing right now.

Here is another plan that has been proposed from Bob Nightengale at USA today:

MLB is considering a three-division, 10-team plan in which teams play only within their division – a concept gaining support among owners and executives. It would abolish the traditional American and National Leagues, and realign the divisions based on geography.

The plan, pending approval of medical experts and providing that COVID-19 testing is available to the public, would eliminate the need for players to be in isolation and allow them to still play at their home ballparks while severely reducing travel.

Baseball will not be ready to begin until it is 100% safe to do so, but it is looking at every possible idea thrown at them. Ken Rosenthal at the Athletic also said,

The most realistic time range for Opening Day — somewhere between mid-June and July 4, in the view of most officials — would allow for an 80- to 100-game regular season, with the schedule running through October. An expanded postseason at neutral sites might follow, with the World Series ending in late November or early December.

TNKGDDAHHYI6VNN5FKKTEK257Y

Right now, the most realistic dates we will see Opening Day is somewhere between mid-June and July 4th, according to most officials— allowing an 80 to 100 game season with the schedule running through October. Then, postseason games would be played at neutral locations with the World Series ending around the end of November. The NFL plans to play in the fall, but if the football season gets canceled, I can’t see this plan realistically working.

Before baseball can think about letting fans into games, it must create a start date, schedule and plan for the postseason and decide where to hold the All-Star Game. Players would more than likely need to be notified 7-10 days before reporting, and spring training would most likely last three more weeks, half of the usual length. A 3-week spring training is probably not enough time for an MLB pitcher to prepare for live games.

There are a lot of questions, but baseball is determined to have a 2020 season.

Who is the 2020 NBA MVP?

Who is the 2020 NBA MVP?

big win

After winning the MVP awar last year, Giannis looks like he has a little edge over LeBron still, even after losing Friday’s game in the Staples Center

Antetokounmpo is averaging 29.6 points a game and 13.8 board, better numbers than he had some how, while playing the least amount of minutes he has since his rookie campaing. Antetokounmpo, the former MVP, is a candidate for Defensive Player of the Year as well. The Bucks also have an insane +16.7 net rating when he is on the floor, top in the league. The Bucks also have the best defense in the NBA by far, and one of the deepest benches

Antetokounmpo’s case for a second consecutive MVP award is very possible, and makes him the current frontrunner. However, it’s not over til the fat lady sings. Not to mention, LeBron’s win tonight over Antetokounmpo definitely helps his case.

Lakers Coach Frank Vogel said that LBJ should most certainly be consitered a frontrunner for the 2020 MVP award, according to Dave McMenamin of ESPN. Vogel pointed to the versality and ability to do-it-all that James brings to the table, including his ability to lead a team, as a factor of why King James should receive serious consideration this spring to win his fifth MVP.

“The body of work he’s put forth for our team I don’t really think it compares to anybody else,” Vogel said. “A lot of great performances throughout the year with other players, so I don’t want to take anything away from anyone else, but it’s pretty unbelievable what he does. What he means to us on both sides of the ball, defensive IQ and the way he impacts the game with his strength, athleticism, scoring the way he does, but also leading the league in assists. And the most important stat is how much we’re winning. So, to me, it’s his.”

Lebron games completely drives the team’s entire offense as a pure floor general with his inhuman ability at times. The club has a +10.4 rating with the 35-year-old on the court, compared to -1.0 when he’s on the bench.

Pelicans Snap Jazz Win Streak

“Pelicans Snap Jazz Win Streak”

NEW ORLEANS — Former Laker Brandon Ingram had a career night, scoring 49 points and helped the Pels snap the Jazz’s 10-game win streak with a 138-132 win on Thursday.

The Jazz were ahead 132-127 thanks to a Bogdanovic 3 with 2:28 to go in overtime, but then didn’t score a point.

Favors finished the game with 21 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks against his old squad. E’Twaun Moore came up big with 16 points for New Orleans, who has won 10 of their last 14 games and are only two games away from the NBA’s top overall draft choice, Zion Williamson, making his highly anticipated debut.

Rookies Nickeil Alexander-Walker and Jaxson Hayes each played vital roles in helping the Pelicans win. Alexander-Walker had 12 points, and Hayes collected nine points, five rebounds and a block

NOLA thought they had defeated the Jazz in regulation on an incredible off-balance jumper with .2 seconds left from BI. Then Jaxson Hayes was called for holding Rudy Gobert as Utah attempted a desperation tip-in on the inbound pass.

This gave Rudy Gobert and the Jazz a chance to win the game by making both free-throws. But with the crowd roaring at the officials, he missed the 1st free throw before hitting the very intense second one to tie it at 122 and force OT.

Superstar Donovan Mitchell tied his career high with a wild 46 points before he missed a few crucial shots in the final minutes of OT. Bogdanovic dropped 26 while Gobert finished with 17 points, 14 rebounds and three blocks. Spida knocked down three 3s in the last four minutes of the 4th to put the Jazz on the cusp of victory, but missed a mid-range jumper inside the final 10 seconds. New Orleans got the board and called timeout with 6.3 seconds left to set up the insane ending to the game. It was very close the whole time. There were a total of 23 different lead changes and 23 ties. Ultimately, New Orleans scored on 11 straight on layups by Derrick Favors and E’Twaun Moore and added on seven free throws to help seal the victory in OT.

10 Extremely Motivational Quotes from Kobe

Every true fan of the NBA has heard about the “Mamba Mentality” which applies in all aspects of life, pushing through whatever it takes in a relentless pursuit of perfection. Kobe Bryant is regarded by a lot as the greatest Laker of all-time and arguably the best scorer, or even player, since Michael Jordan. Kobe spent his entire 20 year career with the Los Angeles Lakers, winning an astounding 5 titles and 2 finals MVPS.

In an interesting interview with the New York Post, 11-time finals champion and Hall of Fame head coach Phil Jackson said Kobe Bryant was the hardest worker he ever coached, even outworking Bulls legend Michael Jordan, one of the most dominant and transcendent players in the entire history of organized sports. All of these quotes are so great they are not in any order.

5-2

  1. “I can’t relate to lazy people. We don’t speak the same language. I don’t understand you. I don’t want to understand you.”

-Kobe was an outstanding 5-2 in the NBA finals.

2.  “If you’re afraid to fail, then you’re probably going to fail.”

-Kobe was spot on with this one. There is a reason they say you are what you say you are.

3. “My brain… it cannot process failure. It will not process failure. Because if I sit there and have to face myself and tell myself, ‘You’re a failure’… I think that’s almost worse than death”

-Kobe thought failure was almost as bad as dying. Now that speaks volumes…

4. “People just don’t understand how obsessed I am with winning.”

-Kobe hit an amazing 36 game-winners in his 20 year career.

5.  ” The most important thing is you must put everybody on notice that you’re here and you are for real. I’m not a player that is just going to come and go. I’m not a player that is going to make an All-Star team one time, two times. I’m here to be an all-time great. Once I made that commitment and said, ‘I want to be one of the greatest ever’, then the game became everything for me.”

-Kobe had 518 30-point games in his career.

6. “I have self-doubt. I have insecurity. I have fear of failure. I have nights when I show up at the arena and I’m like, ‘My back hurts, my feet hurt, my knees hurt. I don’t have it. I just want to chill.’ We all have self-doubt. You don’t deny it, but you also don’t capitulate to it. You embrace it.”

-He was named after the Japanese steak “kobe” according to a lot of sources.

7. “I’ll do whatever it takes to win games, whether it’s sitting on a bench waving a towel, handing a cup of water to a teammate, or hitting the game-winning shot.”

-Kobe was the first guard to be drafted by the NBA out of high school.

8.  “Once you know what failure feels like, determination chases success.”

-Kobe was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on August 23, 1978.

9. “As I sit here now, when I take off my shoe and I look down at my scar, I see beauty in it. I see all the hard work, all the sacrifices. I see the journey that it took to get back to this point of being healthy. And I see beauty in that struggle. That’s what makes it beautiful.”

-He said that if he had gone to college, he would have chosen Duke.

Kobe Bryant

10. “I’m extremely willful to win, and I respond to challenges. It’s not a challenge to me to win the scoring title, because I know I can.”

-Confidence is key, and Bryant was the definition of it. If you are reading this, you are capable of doing ANYTHING if you work hard enough.

Last night, RIP city made NBA fans rejoice, agreeing to a deal with Carmelo Anthony, according to ESPN’s Woj. Anthony has not played life NBA competition in over a year, he last suited up for the Houston Rockets on Nov. 8, 2018 before controversially being released.

The MVP of the 2003 Final Four and number 3 pick in the strong 2003 NBA draft, Anthony has only worn 15 and 7 dating back to his days at Syracuse, but probably will have to choose a new number with the Blazers because 15 is retired (Larry Steele) and 7 is being held out of circulation (Brandon Roy) and should not be worn out of respect.

Superstar Damian Lillard has wanted to play alongside Melo in Portland but did not think it would ultimately happen. About 2 years ago in 2017, Dame told The Undefeated’s Marc Spears that Anthony “didn’t seem opposed” to the idea of playing for the team. For a while he was definitely pressing for his friend to be in the league feeling his friend deserved it, but did not want to pressure him into anything telling Spears,

“I didn’t want to press him. I ain’t a big fan of doing all the extra recruiting and all that stuff… I’m not giving up on anything. I just think I’ve done what I can do.”

According to basketball guru Woj, Melo will suit up for the Blazers during their upcoming road trip, which includes a stop in to face the Rockets on Monday, the team who thought he was too washed to play anymore. Bobby Marks at ESPN said the non-guaranteed deal will reportedly pay Anthony $14,490 for each day he is on the roster. The deal and money will become fully secured on Jan. 7 if he’s still lasts.

Anthony fills a need for the Blazers, who do not have much forward depth at all. Zach Collins had shoulder surgery that is supposed to keep him sidelined for a long 4 months. Rodney Hood has been having back spasms.

The Blazer’s solid center Nurkic remains on the IR after breaking his leg last month during a game. Nurkic isn’t expected back until after the start of the new year. The Trailblazers just signed Pau Gasol in the offseason, but is still rehabbing from foot surgery.

Will Carmelo be able to accept his role on the Trailblazers and ultimately help revive his career? According to Ballislife.com, CJ McCollum said Melo would make Portland a top-3 team in the western conference.

Young Expected to Return Tonight

After what looked to be a season altering injury against the Miami Heat on the 29th, Trae Young is expected to return from a right ankle sprain tonight against San Antonio, league sources told ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

Sources told ESPN Young participated in practice on Monday for the first time since the sprain.

trae-young-2

Fortunately for Atlanta, the Hawks have only played one game since then — a loss at home vs Miami on Halloween night.

In his second season, Young is averaging an impressive 26.8 points, 5.0 rebounds and 7.3 assists. Young, who just turned 21, had a great rookie campaign. After a rough start, Young flipped a switch the second-half, finishing 2nd for rookie of the year behind Mavs star Luka Doncic.

The Hawks have not made the postseason since 2017. In a pretty open Eastern Conference, the Hawks are trying to prove the “experts” wrong.

‘I like my rings the hard way…’ Kobe Wouldn’t Come Out Of Retirement For A Guaranteed Ring

‘I like my rings the hard way…’ Kobe Wouldn’t Come Out Of Retirement For A Guaranteed Ring

Regarded as one of the greatest and fiercest competitors to lace em’ up, Laker legend Kobe Bryant stated Tuesday during his appearance on the Ledlow & Parker podcast that he would never come out of retirement and join a super-team in pursuit of a another championship. Bryant said he would rather earn his rings.

635852445979035282459978466_kobe

“I like my rings the hard way,” Bryant said “I like fighting for them and earning them. I don’t like jumping to the easier route, so I wouldn’t take it.”

Anyone who has ever heard of Kobe knows about his “Mamba Mentality” and his absolutely legendary work ethic (and that’s an understatement). Kobe would show up at the gym for 7:00 AM practices 2 hours earlier, at 5:00 AM. Legend also has it that during his high school practices, he would force his teammates stay and play one-on-one games to 100 points. This mentality stayed the same when he got drafted, former Lakers player and head coach Byron Scott said he once found an 18-year old Bryant shooting in the dark two hours before practice.

Whether these are shots at players who have joined up to form super-teams or not, we don’t know. We DO know that Shaq said this about Kobe in the locker-room, “You’d walk in there and he’d be cutting and grunting and motioning like he was dribbling and shooting — except there was no ball. I thought it was weird, but I’m pretty sure it helped him.” The best compliment of them all had to be when his idol Michael Jordan said, “Kobe had done that work to deserve the comparison. He says Kobe’s the only one to have done the work.”

Lakers: Rondo will Split PG Duties with LeBron

10/25/19

By: @OOSSports

Lakers: Rondo will Split PG Duties with LeBron

Even though LeBron started the opener at Point Guard, Rajon Rondo is a quality PG option as well, who can be used when Coach Vogel feels like the team needs to switch it up and try different rotations putting LeBron at forward.

After Thursday’s practice, Coach Vogel had this to say about his veteran point guard, “I’ve given it a lot of thought, and I think he’ll be in the starting lineup a lot,” referring to Rondo. “I definitely envision a lot of games where he’ll be the starting point guard.” Vogel stated.

LeBron-James-Rajon-Rondo

The Laker’s still must figure out exactly how much “a lot” means, Vogel went on and also said that it could mean just 10 starts for Rondo. The idea is to find matchups that make make sense for Rondo and that will help the Lakers not have to be so dependent on LeBron to set up the team.

LeBron started at PG, guards Avery Bradley and Danny Green started at the two and three, along with AD at the four and McGee at the five. The veteran point guard Rondo did not appear in the Lakers’ season-opening loss vs. the LA Clippers, sidelined with a sore calf, and the offense was sloppy. The Lakers shot 43.5 percent as a team from the field and had 14 giveaways to only 20 assists.

Rondo said he first started to feel some pain in his calf the day before the Lakers’ last preseason game vs Golden State. Rondo was able to participate during Thursday’s practice at “full speed” and “didn’t look impaired at all,” said Vogel, but his chances to play in tonight’s game against the Jazz are yet to be determined.

“He looked really good,” Vogel said. “He looked fresher than everybody else. A little bounce in his step, which is good. But, you know, it’s not how he feels today, it’s how he feels after today’s workload. Right? So we’ll see how he responds to what he’s doing today and make that decision tomorrow.”

Bradley was able to impress the coaching staff when he got to run with the starting unit during the preseason, sources told ESPN, dropping 18 points on an effective 7-for-9 shooting in the Lakers’ dominant 126-93 preseason win over the Warriors on Oct. 16. With Rondo not available, the next choice was to insert Bradley into the lineup which we may see more of, depending on how much Rondo starts at PG.

James finished with only 18 points, going a poor 7-19 from the floor. He also added 10 rebounds and 8 assists vs the Clippers. James played his worst minutes in the 4th, only making one shot on four attempts and committing 3 turnovers in the last frame.

James focused on targeting Anthony Davis in the post much of the game, something that worked for the offense but became less-effective as the game played out. With this being said, I’m more than confident that this duo will be nearly unstoppable once they learn how to play together more effectively. Plus, it was Davis’s first official game as a Laker.

“I think if there’s one thing that stands out, is when they started bringing soft help in the post, we didn’t respond to that well enough in terms of our spacing,” Vogel said about his team. “There’s simple counters, and if they’re going to sit in AD’s lap, with the shooters that we have out there, we should be shooting open 3s, if we’re spaced appropriately in those situations.”

Rondo, the 21st pick in the 2006 draft, is now entering his 13th campaign. Last year, he averaged 9.2 points on 40.5% shooting (35.9% from 3) with 8 dimes and 5 boards in his first season in LA. He stated that a starting role on the team is not something he is worried about.

“My preference is what coach Vogel wants me to do,” he said. “I’ll be cool with that.”

Vogel said there still could be games where Rondo comes off the bench and Bradley starts, depending on matchups.

What you didn’t know about “The Crossover”

What you didn’t know about “The Crossover”

If you are an avid follower of the NBA, you have probably seen the legendary play of AI crossing up MJ countless amount of times. What you probably didn’t know, are the events that lead up to the infamous play. You will not believe what happened about a month before this iconic moment in NBA history.

Growing up, Iverson was obsessed with MJ and the 90’s Bulls. Who wasn’t? But his love and passion for the Bulls was on a whole different level, he wanted to be Michael Jordan. He called himself MJ’s number one fan, and would stand as close as possible to the TV when MJ was playing to the point that his mother said she was afraid of him possibly going blind. When he saw MJ lose to the Knicks and the Pistons, he would apparently sit their and weep. He would get so angry when Jordan lost that the behavior started to annoy his father, who apparently would tell his son, “Why are you crying over him? You don’t even know that guy!”

Deep down inside, Iverson felt like he did know him though, “It felt like he was a part of me.” The Georgetown product went on to go as the #1 overall pick in the draft to the Philadelphia 76ers and his impact was immediately noticed. In just his very first game against the Bucks, AI put up an impressive 30 points showing that he belonged in the league.

His second NBA game had a much different atmosphere and vibe, as he found himself playing against his hero MJ and the reigning champion Chicago Bulls on November 2nd, 1996. Iverson was in complete shock when he first saw Jordan step on the hardwood. He described that first encounter by saying that, “He really didn’t look human, he didn’t look like he was real to me at all, he looked like he was glowing!” He even got to see Jordan receive his 4th ring before the game. Iverson knew he still had a job to do, but unfortunately he did not play as good as he had to start the season as the Bulls easily blew out the 76ers as not much was said between the two.

On December 21st, 1996 the Bulls were in town. This time Iverson played his childhood hero for the second time. He played much better this time, dropping 32 points to MJs 31. AI’s scoring effort was not enough and the result was the same, with the Bulls easily coming out on top. Not much was said once again. This time Michael Jordan expressed his thoughts on the rookie, saying AI was confident and was relatively complementary of Iverson saying he liked his attitude and skill set but still needed improvement. As the season went on, the Bulls continued to dominate and Iverson continued to make his case for rookie of the year.

When the 1997 All-Star game came along, that is when he met his idol. For AI, the experience is definitely not what he wanted or expected it to be. Iverson was preparing to play in the rookie game at All-Star weekend, and suddenly he crossed paths with MJ. Right after they made eye contact, Jordan simply said, “What’s up, you little b***h?” Clearly, Iverson was very confused so he immediately tried to shake it off by saying, “Alright man.” When Iverson was a teenager growing up, he used to tell his friends and family, “If I get the greatest player to ever play the game on me, i’m gonna try my move on him!”

After MJ called him a “little b***h”, it is safe to say he was going to try to get him the very next time they faced off. On March 12th, 1997, he got his shot. With Jordan’s words still fresh in Iverson’s head, you could tell he was on a mission that night and was not backing down to anyone. Throughout the game, MJ and AI were both getting buckets, but they never guarded each other until Jordan hit an and-one layup on Iverson. Moments later, AI got the last laugh, and a laugh that would be heard for many years to come. Allen Iverson got his shot to try his best move on the greatest player in the world, and it worked.

Iverson went on to share with us, “All I saw was him and I just backed up, gave him a little one and he went for it. And I was like oh yeah, I got his ass now!” He also said after the game that he knew it was a good move, but he really didn’t know how big of a deal it was until little kids would come up to him and say, “Hey, are you the guy that crossed Jordan?” Then, it hit him that he did something special. Years later, Iverson was at a Hornets game and Michael Jordan invited him to sit with him in his box as Allen Iverson expressed his admiration for his childhood hero telling him how much he loved him. Jordan apparently responded, “You don’t love me! You wouldn’t have crossed me like that if you loved me!” The two apparently remain great friends to this day and have a great deal of respect for one another. They say to never meet your idol, but I guess that doesn’t apply to AI.
